The medieval era (before AD 1,000) only happened because everyone was so sure that the world would end. Lives were insignificant. Wealthy barons treated the working vassals with absolute disrespect and disregarded their own existence. Wars were waged effortlessly and for far cheaper than it would be today. All this because they were certain that in the year 1,000... All existence would end. When 1,000 came and humanity was still very much alive. Artists and churches exploded into life... bringing out the Renaissance era. Where value for life skyrocketed and everyone gained an appreciation for the art of living. But of course... there were always the religious extremists who insisted that "Judgement" was coming unto us all. The very same monks and priests who decried AD 1000 turned towards other possibilities. That is the basis in which our life is designed. Man seeks the knowledge and hunts the power to control the means... Which is fear. Fear of heaven.. fear of hell.. fear of dying. It drives us to do good. That same fear is behind the 2012 conspiracy. The reality... When one date fails to bring the end of the world.. People will always turn to the ancients and find another date with which to scare us... Yet again. Common fact: The modern world doesn't follow the Aztec calendar. We follow the calendar of the Romans. Can we really be so certain that the Aztec calendar followed the same timeframe and conceptual measurements of time as the Romans? (a co-existing culture in a completely different place on earth way back then) It makes for an interesting discussion but, I think it's a simple use of fear. The most important thing for us is that we continue to live as if life will always be worth living. No matter what fate befalls us. We should never hide in a cave because we think tomorrow's going to bring our downfall. Even so.. it's more dangerous to be in a cave than out. :)
